Why Do We Do All This?

Most often, once youth are able to leave homelessness behind, they are not anxious to be identified as ‘that formerly-homeless person’. With a lifetime ahead of them, they are thankful They occasionally stop by to touch bases with staff, but they work hard to stay out of the spotlight. Once in a while, however, a youth feels a need to ‘give back,' and that certainly has been the case with Kari Peterson. Kari, a previous Buchanan Center participant, had been involved with Outreach for some time before joining the Youth Advisory Council which plans and implements activities and events at the Outreach Center downtown. Kari has turned her life around, is in stable housing, and is graduating this spring with an AA degree in human services from DMACC. Kari was one of six DMACC students featured in the Des Moines Register on Thursday, March 2nd for her induction into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Kari also volunteers with the Outreach Van and works one day a week at the DMACC Food Pantry at the Outreach Center. Providing a critical helping hand and an opportunity to turn a life around is what IHYC is all about.
